Rani - 7 Long Lane, London N3
Number of visits?
Several - most recently 2002.Location?
Finchley - a five minute walk from Finchley Central station.Food?
Gujerati, vegetarian. This means that I can choose from the entire menu, and yet meateaters don't miss the meat because the food is so tasty. Although Indian this is not a "curry house" - the food is delicate and delicious. Favourites include banana methi - slices of banana in tomato and herb gravy - and paratha paneer - thin bread lined with chilli and cottage cheese. The falooda, a rose milkshake containing icecream, jellied seeds and vermicelli topping, is exquisite and exotic. While the food is good - and fantastic value - it is unusual, so worth getting a description from the staff (especially for the cold starters). The drinks are average - orange juice and soft drinks are cheap and obviously out of a carton - stick to bottled water or wine so that you know it will be fresh and branded. Wine is either "red" or "white" - but it has always been quite drinkable such as cabernet sauvignon - staff will show you the bottle if you want to know what you will get!

Locals, a mix of cultures and ages.Cost?
£12-£15 per head, £10 for a bottle of wine.If you are on their mailing list, you can use their Option 11 - poppadom, starter, sak, rice or bread, and desert all for £11. Excellent value.
Anything else?
Unlike many Indian restaurants the staff are not all family members, but a mixture of young people who are well turned out and helpful. The decor is simple, but the ambience is good.Opening Hours?
