The Ivy - 1 West Street, London W1
Number of visits?
Several, most recently 2001.Location?
West End, just off Cambridge Circus. Few minutes walk from Leicester Square.Food?
Good with a separate vegetarian and vegan menu on request. Recommended - whole artichoke with red wine sauce, and the baked alaska which is set alight at your table! Food is very good, but not to the standard of L'Escargot. Wine list is good - we drank the Two Mile Creek cabernet sauvignon.Clientele
Celebs and actors - Elton John was there when we visited - and American tourists. Sittings are pre or post theatre - most diners are showgoers.Cost?
£30 per head, plus wine starting at £20 per bottle.Anything else?
You will need to book up to 6 weeks in advance to secure a table, but I have been successful every time by ringing at midday on the day, and grabbing a cancellation. You may need to hold, or ring back. Generally reservations are confirmed in the morning, so lunchtime is the best time to try your luck for that evening.Nice decor - stained glass windows and a mural. Children are brought pencil cases and drawing paper. Adrian Gill has written a book about The Ivy.
Opening Hours?
