Kettners - 26 Romilly Street, London W1V

Number of visits?
Numerous - most recently 2003.

Location?
Soho, in London's West End. Just off Cambridge Circus (by Les Miserables) - a few minutes' walk from either Tottenham Court Road or Leicester Square.

Food?
Primarily pizza and pasta, but done well! Kettners also does a fantastic steak, good fish and plenty of other things. The menu doesn't change often, and many of the pizza/pasta items mirror Pizza Express (their new owner) but the staff are friendly and helpful, the wine list is good and the champagne list supreme. Recommended: the onion soup, house pizzas and any of the puddings. Avoid the vegetarian chilli - it was wet and odd! A reliable place to take friends and family without breaking the bank.

Clientele
All sorts - actors, tourists, locals, and more recently "new media" types, but you can ignore them. Well behaved children are also welcome - I've been going to Kettners since primary school! Smart enough for a "posh do" and informal enough to allow relaxation - a great balance which makes this my default eaterie.

Cost?
£20 a head for three courses, £15 for a decent bottle of wine.

Anything else?
Loads of history! Kettners was founded at the end of the 19th Century, and the rooms upstairs have been used by Oscar Wilde, who took rent boys there! The champagne bar is renouned and has an excellent selection.

My favourite feature is that Kettners does not take bookings, so you can usually just turn up and be seated straight away.

Small step into dining room, no disabled access to toilets.

Opening Hours?
Noon to midnight, 7 days.

Official Website?
None.
